Let's Talk About Change
02/18/2009 - By Kimberly McCloskey Let’s talk about change.
Change is always happening, every day, every place. Some change we have no control over and some we gladly initiate, right? But occasionally change invokes fear, doesn’t it? Like having to learn a new program, find a new job, or you realize your business is booming and you have to change to keep up. The unknown is scary to most of us but there are simple steps you can take to remedy that problem.
Have you ever noticed that when you initiate change, it’s not as intimidating as when you are taken by surprise? Why? Because you saw it coming and you planned accordingly. Be observant and stay informed on technological advances in your industry. Read magazines related to your line of work or join industry-specific forums or attend on-line seminars. There are so many different avenues for information that the possibilities are staggering once you start looking into it (believe me!). If you stay up-to-date then you’ll feel confident and informed when the time comes to take the plunge; the impending changes will already be known.
Okay, maybe you feel overwhelmed with everything you need to learn and watch out for. I sure do sometimes. Simply modify the way you view change. Change is not bad; it’s just different. If you perceive change as something exhilarating, then naturally you begin to look forward to it. For example, you know how you dread buying that new digital camera but eventually you refer to it as your “new toy”? Of course you do, we all do it. Why? Because it’s fun. We realize at some point that we enjoy learning how to use all the options our “new toy” offers and it isn’t so bad after all. Realize you’re going to have fun learning.
We all know that positive thinking is a great tool. Bring it up to the next level; don’t just think about the changes you want to make in your life, daydream about them. Visualize in detail what you want to achieve, how you want to feel, and when you want this to happen. See it clearly in your mind’s eye and it will happen.
These are some of the simple steps we can all easily implement. Be more observant and perceptive of the gradual changes that are taking place every day in your business and personal lives. Realize that learning something new can be exciting and enjoyable. Look forward to learning and look forward to change. Think positively about change as you look to the future. And most important: don’t ever stop doing all of these things.
We do have the power to make change pleasant.
