Moving Out of Rental Property Checklist

Once you've made the decision to move out of your rental property, the're certain things you need to do. You cannot just move without telling the agent. In fact, if you look at your contract, you'll find that there is a specific time frame involved.
You will need to notify the agent of your intention to move several weeks ahead; otherwise you may be legally responsible for paying the rent even though you are not living there.
To make sure the agent receives your notice of intent to move, either deliver it personally, asking them to sign and date your copy, or send it by registered mail. You also want to be sure of getting your bond back and this means you must leave the place as clean as it was when you went in. Once the furniture is out, you'll be able to clean down the walls, inside and out of the cupboards, the bath and shower including shower screen, and the stove - both inside and out. Dust all the light fittings and mow the lawn.
Vacuum the flooring and have the carpets steam-cleaned if necessary. Try to tee up the inspection so that you can be present, but if not, it's a good idea to take pictures of everything to prove that it is clean. Don't forget to cancel all utilities when you leave.
